Assignment 1

The brief:
Produce a small photo essay of 10 images that demonstrates your engagement with the lives, experiences and histories of your local community and its people.

My initial reaction to the brief, as previously mentioned is to portray my surroundings as an exile. My personal relationship with the Island is very complicated and the majority of my experiences in Alderney are lead by the feeling of being trapped and almost held against my will. I can honestly say that I am not a part of local community in any way whatsoever and I can only place myself as a passive observer. I wonder if the best way to approach this topic would be to concentrate on either history or a landscape with people obviously present somewhere along the way. I shall analyse the brief deeper and come back with some further thoughts.

I am thinking of approaching this assignment like Walker Evans during his subway adventures. I do not want to be noticed, as I generally feel unnoticed. I do not want to be visible, I don't want to be the part of the picture. I don't think devising anything special will be necessary, I hope that just carrying my camera casually hung on my neck with the attached cable shutter release stretching across to my pocket will be enough. And any issues with the exposure or blurring will be an added bonus. Such errors could correspond to my being here feeling like an error. Now I just need to decide on the specific shots, the specific field I want to concentrate on photographing.

The approach to the assignment unfortunately had to be changed. My tutor advised that my initial idea could miss the point of the assignment and therefore I decided to photograph one of my very few  involvements with the Island, which will be my contribution to the Jumble sale raising funds for our local Animal Welfare Society. I will be donating clothes and baking a cake and I shall include these activities in the set, as well as the general preparations and the Jumble.
